Innovation. Commercialization. These two concepts were supposed to be married. The latter was supposed to be a part of the definition of the former. Ultimately, ideally, the fundamental issue driving the choice of a commercialization strategy should be the alignment of the innovation to a firm’s business model. But for some reason or the other, we see innovation and commercialization as separate, and innovation has practically grown to mean the idea, product or service, with no close link to commercialization or to the business model. But why? Somebody, anybody? But my fight is more specific: Open innovation. Open commercialization.

Financial advisors are looked to by millions of South Africans to demystify the world of investment. They build relationships with their customers by providing sound financial guidance on how to invest their hard-earned savings. The relationship that needs to come under scrutiny in the interest of the customer, however, is the one between product suppliers and financial advisors (intermediaries). The Retail Distribution Review (RDR) aims to do just that - it’s the latest legislation proposed by the Financial Services Board (FSB) and is due to be implemented in 2016.
